Visitors for Art Thessaloniki 2026

As the international art world continues to navigate shifting cultural, social and economic realities, art fairs increasingly serve not only as marketplaces but also as platforms for dialogue, experimentation and collaboration.

The 9th Art Thessaloniki International Contemporary Fair 2026 demonstrated precisely this evolving role. Bringing together galleries, artists, collectors, curators, museum professionals and cultural institutions from across Europe and beyond, the fair once again positioned itself as one of the most dynamic contemporary art events in Southeast Europe.

More importantly, however, Art Thessaloniki revealed a growing capacity to foster meaningful cultural exchange beyond the traditional exhibition model.

Throughout the fair, visitors encountered a broad spectrum of artistic practices ranging from painting, sculpture and printmaking to conceptual and interdisciplinary projects.

Participants from Greece, Germany, Italy, France, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and other countries contributed to an atmosphere characterised by openness, curiosity and professional engagement.

For many galleries and artists, the value of Art Thessaloniki extended well beyond immediate commercial outcomes. Conversations with collectors, curators and institutional representatives frequently developed into discussions about future collaborations, travelling exhibitions and cross-border cultural initiatives.

This increasing emphasis on long-term professional relationships reflects a broader transformation within the contemporary art ecosystem, where networking and cultural exchange are becoming as important as sales.

(c) Artforum Hellas|Global Galleries.
Artforum Hellas and Global Galleries: Creating Platforms for Dialogue

Among the organisations actively contributing to this broader cultural dimension were Artforum Hellas and Global Galleries.

Throughout the fair, both organisations demonstrated a shared commitment to supporting artistic visibility, international cooperation and critical cultural discourse.

Rather than limiting their participation to conventional exhibition activities, Artforum Hellas and Global Galleries developed a series of initiatives designed to stimulate conversation, encourage professional exchange and strengthen connections between artists, galleries, collectors and cultural institutions.

A central component of this engagement was the presentation of the pilot project NEW Feminism, featuring works by the three German artists Jana Dettmer, LEONI (A. Jäkel) and Corinna Zieleke. Conceived as an open platform for cultural dialogue rather than an ideological statement, the project explored contemporary female artistic perspectives and their relevance within today’s international cultural landscape.

The project encouraged discussions about participation, identity, equality and artistic freedom while fostering meaningful exchange among artists, collectors, curators, museum professionals and cultural decision-makers from different countries. In doing so, NEW Feminism demonstrated how contemporary art can contribute to constructive international dialogue and intercultural understanding.

This collaborative approach reflects a growing recognition that contemporary art requires not only exhibition opportunities but also sustainable frameworks for dialogue, documentation and international cooperation.

The activities were further supported by Winter Stiftung Hamburg, whose ongoing commitment to cultural exchange and artistic development contributed significantly to the realisation of several projects presented during the fair. Together, these initiatives highlighted the importance of cultural partnerships in strengthening international artistic networks and promoting cross-border exchange within the contemporary European art scene.

(c) Artforum Hellas | Global Galleries.
The Artforum Sketch Project: Preserving Artistic Processes

One simple but distinctive initiative introduced during Art Thessaloniki 2026 was the launch of the Artforum Sketch Project.

The project invites selected artists to contribute original sketches, visual notes and preparatory studies to a growing archive dedicated to artistic processes and creative development.

In an art world often focused on completed works and market-ready presentations, the Sketch Project shifts attention towards the intellectual and experimental stages of artistic production.

Visitors responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to engage with artistic thinking in its formative phases. The project highlighted how sketches frequently function as independent creative statements rather than merely preparatory material.

By documenting these often-hidden aspects of artistic practice, Artforum Hellas seeks to preserve an important dimension of contemporary cultural heritage while creating valuable resources for future exhibitions, publications and educational programmes.

(c) Artforum Hellas | Global Galleries. NEW Feminsm brochures, monograph – Artforum Editions

Publications as Cultural Infrastructure

Another noteworthy aspect of the fair was the growing importance of publications as instruments of cultural mediation and artistic visibility.

Several new monographs, catalogues and artist publications were introduced during the event, reflecting a wider trend towards deeper contextual engagement with artistic practice.

For artists and galleries alike, publications increasingly serve as long-term cultural documents that extend the lifespan and reach of exhibitions beyond the duration of a fair.

The strong interest shown by visitors, collectors and cultural professionals confirmed that the demand for thoughtful artistic documentation remains significant.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-1270" src="https://www.artforumhellas.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Artforum-Hellas-.-Global-Galleries.-Visitors-for-Thessaloniki-art-fair.--300x155.jpg" alt="People cross a city street near a large metallic sculpture and electronic billboards displaying ads and event information.
Contemporary Art as a Space for Conversation

Beyond individual projects and exhibitions, Art Thessaloniki 2026 revealed an encouraging willingness among participants to engage with broader cultural questions.

The project’s relevance was further reflected in the strong interest shown by a broad spectrum of artists, collectors, curators, museum professionals and cultural decision-makers from across Europe and beyond.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-1263" src="https://www.artforumhellas.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Artforum-Hellas-.-Global-Galleries.-Art-director-Pantelis-Tsatsis-Thessaloniki-art-fair.--300x194.jpg" alt="A man speaks at a podium during the 9th Art Thessaloniki art fair, while a group of people stand behind him clapping.
International cultural exchange was further supported through the engagement of Miami-based art influencer and gallerist Aura Copeland, whose interest in the project contributed to expanding transatlantic dialogue and visibility.

While representing diverse artistic positions, cultural backgrounds and professional perspectives, their collective response underscored the project’s potential as a platform for future international collaboration and contemporary cultural exchange.

Visibility Beyond the Fair

The impact of Art Thessaloniki 2026 has continued well beyond the closing days of the exhibition.

The fair’s impact continued beyond the exhibition halls through follow-up reports, artist features, photographic documentation and digital communication initiatives published by participating organisations and exhibitors.

Continued circulation of these reports will reflect not only the growing visibility of participating artists and galleries but also the expanding relevance of Art Thessaloniki within the broader European contemporary art landscape.

(c) Artforum Hellas | Global Galleries.
Looking Forward

Art Thessaloniki 2026 demonstrated that contemporary art fairs can successfully function as cultural ecosystems where exhibitions, publications, dialogue, research and international collaboration intersect.

The active engagement of organisations such as Artforum Hellas, Global Galleries and Winter Stiftung Hamburg illustrates how independent cultural actors can contribute meaningfully to the development of sustainable artistic networks and international exchange.

The positive response from artists, galleries, curators and cultural institutions, together with a number of follow-up discussions, invitations and potential collaborative projects, indicates that the exchanges initiated in Thessaloniki are likely to generate lasting professional and cultural connections beyond the fair itself.

In this sense, the true legacy of Art Thessaloniki 2026 may not be measured solely by attendance figures or sales results, but by its ability to create lasting connections between artists, institutions and audiences across cultural boundaries.

Opening a Space for Contemporary Female Perspectives

As part of its commitment to fostering contemporary cultural exchange, Artforum Hellas (Artforum Culture Foundation A.M.K.E.) and Global Galleries presented the pilot project NEW Feminism during the 9th Art Thessaloniki International Contemporary Fair 2026.

(c)Artforum Hellas & Global Galleries: New Feminism – A Pilot Project at Art Thessaloniki 2026

The project was realised and professionally coordinated in close cooperation with Global Galleries, whose team was responsible for the exhibition implementation and presentation at the fair. Additional support was provided by Artforum Culture Foundation and Winter Stiftung Hamburg.

From the beginning, NEW Feminism was not conceived as an ideological statement or a closed curatorial concept. Instead, it was designed as an open cultural platform inviting dialogue about the role of female artistic perspectives in contemporary society and the international art world.

The project brought together works by Jana Dettmer, LEONI (A. Jäkel) and Corinna Zieleke, whose artistic approaches explored questions of identity, perception, memory and social experience through highly individual visual languages.

Beyond Old Polarizations

One of the central intentions of NEW Feminism was to move beyond traditional ideological confrontations and ask a different question:
Can contemporary feminism be understood as a shared cultural reality based on equality, dignity, participation and mutual respect?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-1305" src="https://www.artforumhellas.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Artforum-Hellas-.-Global-Galleries-New-Feminism-pilot-project.-Visitora-in-front-of-LENI-wall-Art-Thessaloniki-2026r.-1-1-300x224.jpg" alt="A group of people stand in front of a gallery wall displaying colorful abstract paintings, engaging in conversation.
Many visitors welcomed this approach. Conversations at the exhibition stand repeatedly focused on the possibility of creating spaces where different perspectives can coexist without reducing artistic practice to political categories.

(c) Artforum-Hellas-.-impression-New-Feminism-pilot-project-Art Thessaloniki 2026

Strong Interest from Collectors and Curators

Throughout the fair, the project generated continuous discussions among collectors, curators, museum professionals and cultural decision-makers.

Particularly encouraging was the response from international visitors from Greece, Germany, North Macedonia, Italy and France. Several collectors expressed appreciation for the project’s balanced and non-confrontational approach, which allowed the artworks themselves to remain at the centre of attention.

(c) Artforum-Hellas-.-impression-New-Feminism-pilot-project-Art Thessaloniki 2026

Curators and museum representatives highlighted the relevance of the project’s core questions:

How can female artistic perspectives be represented without being reduced to political labels?

What role should cultural institutions play in promoting participation and equality?

Can contemporary art contribute to a more nuanced understanding of social transformation?

Many participants agreed that these questions remain highly relevant and deserve continued exploration.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-1242" src="https://www.artforumhellas.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Artforum-Hellas-.-Global-Galleries-catalogues-New-Feminism-pilot-project-Thessaloniki-art-fair.--300x177.jpg" alt="A display of art books and flyers on a table, featuring colorful abstract covers by Jana Dettmer, Corinna Zieleke, and Leona J.
Publications as Catalysts for Dialogue

The bilingual English-Greek publication accompanying the project became an unexpected success.

Around 500 copies were distributed during the fair to visitors, artists, collectors, curators and institutional representatives.

The strong demand demonstrated that interest extended beyond the artworks themselves and included the broader cultural ideas and discussions that inspired the project.

At the same time, the fair provided an opportunity to present newly published monographs by Jana Dettmer and LEONI, as well as a catalogue by Corinna Zieleke.

A Platform Rather Than a Conclusion

For Artforum Hellas, the success of NEW Feminism cannot be measured simply by visitor numbers or media visibility.

The project’s greatest achievement may have been its ability to initiate meaningful conversations and encourage diverse perspectives.

Rather than providing definitive answers, NEW Feminism seeks to remain an evolving platform for cultural exchange, artistic collaboration and critical reflection

The discussion has only just begun…

ArtLink is our international platform to connect professional artists with curators, collectors and other creative minds across the globe.
The Cultural, Economic and Political Necessity of Presenting Artists on a Global Level.
There is no doubt: art and culture are fundamental elements of human life and progress. Without the plurality of artistic expression and cultural diversity, there can be no true prosperity—neither in society nor in the economy.
Artists are not merely creators of objects or performances. They are catalysts of reflection, experimentation and imagination—pushing the boundaries of freedom, often where political or societal discourse cannot go without harm. Artistic exploration allows us to investigate and visualise psychological and social truths that cannot always be spoken directly. In this sense, art is not just a cultural product; it is a space of human possibility.
Artists—regardless of gender, background, or identity—serve as vital sources of inspiration and freedom. Their work is a mirror to society and to ourselves.
In many cases, art may be the only peaceful and non-destructive way to understand others—and to come to terms with our own inner lives.
That is why we, as a society, must support professional artists with genuine commitment: financially, structurally, and socially. Every artist brings a unique perspective to light, enriching our collective human experience. Artistic diversity is not a luxury, but a democratic necessity—essential for the development of free, pluralistic, and open societies.
At Artforum Culture Foundation Hellas, in cooperation with our partners and networks, we are proud to offer a dedicated platform for artists to present their work, their biographies, and their values to a global audience. We believe that supporting artists is not only a cultural task, but a civic responsibility.
To strengthen this support, we have created ArtLink – an international platform for professional exchange. The initiative includes online profiles, back-office curatorial advice, annual bilingual artist books, and regular newsletters sent to collectors, museums, curators, architects, corporate art departments, and journalists.
We are convinced that a non-profit organisation must take on this role: to connect, to promote, and to protect artistic voices worldwide. However, to do so effectively, we depend on support—from the artists themselves, from public institutions, from the EU, and from committed individuals across the globe.
Memberships, donations and public grants are essential tools to help us realise this mission.
Together, we can ensure that the arts remain not only visible, but vibrant—and that artists continue to inspire the world, across all borders.

Expanding Cultural Space

As a complementary initiative to Virtual Art Projects, Augmented Realities is conceived as a focused platform dedicated specifically toartistic practices using Augmented Reality (AR).
While Virtual Art Projects concentrates on web-based and digital works, Augmented Realities explores how digital layers can interact with physical space. AR allows artists to overlay virtual elements onto real environments—urban spaces, landscapes, historical sites, architecture, or exhibition venues—thereby expanding perception and reinterpreting cultural contexts.
The project invites Greek and international artists to develop AR-based works that engage with themes such as cultural memory, identity, mythology, migration, environment, and contemporary social realities. Particular emphasis is placed on projects that create meaningful dialogue between physical location and digital intervention.

Key objectives:
• To explore AR as an autonomous artistic medium;
• To connect local spaces with global audiences;
• To create hybrid exhibition formats combining on-site and remote experiences;
• To foster innovation at the intersection of art, technology, and cultural discourse.
Selected works may be presented through:
• AR-enabled exhibitions in cooperation with partner institutions;
• Public-space interventions accessible via smartphone;
• AR-enhanced publications;
• Online documentation and international dissemination.
Augmented Realities positions AR not as a technical novelty, but as a critical artistic tool – one that expands cultural space, challenges perception, and strengthens international exchange through innovative, site-responsive practices.

Greek communities in the USA (especially the East Coast), London, Germany, Italy, Russia/Ukraine, Melbourne, Cape Town and other international centers have shaped important artistic and cultural exchanges. The project also welcomes perspectives from other diasporic communities facing similar questions of identity and cultural continuity.
We invite greek artists who live and work abroad and who either preserve elements of their cultural heritage or actively contribute to intercultural dialogue and artistic exchange. Themes such as migration, memory, hybridity, and transnational identity are central.
This project aims to position contemporary Greek art within a dynamic European and global exchange. While Greece is often perceived internationally through the lens of Antiquity and religious cultural heritage, its modern and contemporary artistic developments—particularly those emerging from the significant yet still insufficiently recognized artistic movements of the 20th century—deserve broader visibility and critical engagement.
Building upon the legacy of influential modern Greek artists and post-war artistic developments, the initiative seeks to highlight the diversity, intellectual
strength, and conceptual depth of contemporary artistic positions in Greece today. It intends to demonstrate that Greek art is not defined solely by its historical past, but is actively shaping present and future cultural discourse.
By presenting a wide range of artistic approaches—conceptual, visual, interdisciplinary—the project contributes to an international dialogue that connects Greek artistic production with broader European and global conversations.

Call for Artists
Contemporary artists, wether from greece or concerning greece, are invited to submit their work and conceptual statements for consideration. Submissions should reflect a clear artistic position and demonstrate engagement with contemporary cultural, social, or aesthetic questions.
An independent jury composed of art professionals, cultural practitioners, art market experts, and artists will review the submissions based on artistic quality, conceptual coherence, and relevance to the project’s aims.
Selected contributions will be presented through curated online features and, subject to agreement, may also be included in print publications and disseminated through partner organizations and international networks.
The objective is to strengthen the international visibility of contemporary Greek art and to foster sustained cultural exchange grounded in professional standards, openness, and mutual respect.

ROPOTO – Lost Village: The Experience of Uncertainty
Ropoto, a small village in Central Greece, has become a striking symbol of environmental vulnerability and structural failure. Following years of geologicalinstability—culminating in a massive landslide in 2012—large parts of the village were abandoned. Homes, streets, and most famously the dramatically tilted church, now standing at an extreme angle, have become visible markers of ecological imbalance, insufficient planning, and the fragile relationship between human settlement and natural forces.

The project ROPOTO – Lost Village: The Experience of Uncertainty takes this site as a starting point for artistic research and reflection. It explores themes such as environmental policy, climate impact, geological risk, collective memory, displacement, and the psychological dimensions of instability. Ropoto becomes both subject and metaphor: a place where the consequences of environmental neglect and structural miscalculation are physically inscribed into the landscape.

Artists are invited to engage with the village not as a spectacle, but as a living context shaped by real histories and affected communities. The remaining inhabited part of Ropoto will, in cooperation with local residents, serve as a platform for artistic exchange — a space for dialogue, encounter, and interdisciplinary reflection.

The project aims to transform a site marked by collapse into a center for critical inquiry and cultural resilience. Through artistic contributions, Ropoto may become a place where uncertainty is not only documented, but examined, interpreted, and collectively reimagined.

Art as a Medium of Communication in Democracies – and as a Form of Articulation in Autocratic Systems.
Art constitutes a vital space for societal reflection and public discourse. In democratic contexts, it facilitates open dialogue, critical inquiry, and pluralistic exchange. In autocratic or restrictive systems, art may become one of the few remaining channels of articulation—operating symbolically, indirectly, or through forms of resistance and documentation.
This project examines the role and responsibility of artistic practice within differing political environments. It seeks to present and connect international artistic positions that critically engage with the relationship between art, public space, and structures of power.

Expectations of Participating Artists
Participating artists are expected to submit independent, conceptually grounded contributions that clearly reflect on the relationship between artistic practice and its political or societal context. Submissions should articulate a discernible position and demonstrate thoughtful engagement with issues of freedom of expression, responsibility, and the conditions under which art is produced and received.
Contributions may take visual, textual, or media-based form, provided they meet professional and ethical standards.

Publication and Dissemination
Selected contributions may be published through Artforum and, subject to prior agreement with the respective authors or rights holders, may also be disseminated through partner organizations and international networks.
All publication and distribution will take place in accordance with applicable copyright laws and based on the consent of the contributors.
The objective of this initiative is to strengthen the visibility of artistic positions that understand art as a responsible societal force—supporting dialogue, critical reflection, and the principles of cultural freedom.
